Bissau is the capital of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and the population of the capital city is 355.000, according to 2004 data. The city was founded on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and along the Geba River and serves as the main city of port, government and military as it is the biggest city in the country. The Osvaldo Vieria International Airport is located in Bissau and the economy of the city consists of the trade of peanuts, wooden goods, palm oil, and rubber.
The 18th-century Amilcar Cabral Monument, the Pidjiguiti Monument, the National Ethnographic Museum of Guinea-Bissau, the New Bissau Stadium, and the local beach are among the must-see places of the city. Due to its tropical savannah climate, Bissau has high temperatures throughout the year. While the lowest temperature is about 17 °C in January, the highest temperature is about 30 °C between June and October and heavy rains can be seen during that time as seasonal normals are continuously changing in this region.
