About Grimsey

Grimsey is an islet, located 40 kilometers off the north coast of the island of Iceland. According to 2011 data, there is a population of 86 people. The island Grimsey is the northernmost region of Iceland and the closest land is known as the island of Flatey. The island has steep cliffs in the entire area except on the south coast and it is located at 105 meters above sea level. Despite being located in the northern latitude, the climate is generally mild due to the warm water current coming from the Gulf of Mexico region. To date the highest temperature value on the island has been 26 degrees, while the lowest temperature value reaches -6 degrees.

Despite the island being treeless, the island is rich in vegetation. There are grass, moss and marshland areas. There are also many bird and special sea bird species. Aswell as Grimsey Airport, which provides airline transportation on the island, ferry services are also available, connecting the island and the land on the northern coast of Iceland. Although the main industrial activity on the island is fishing, also agriculture farming and collecting seabird eggs is common. Those who want to explore the Arctic Circle, there is also a church and a school on Grimsey Island, which attracts the attention of tourists.
