About Karaganda

Karaganda is the capital of the Karaganda Region in Kazakhstan. It is the country’s 4th most populated city and is home to rich coal mines. The city gets its name from the ‘caragana’ bushes that are plentiful in the region. The city’s establishment dates back to 1856. The development of the coal and copper mining sectors and the implementation of railway lines gave the city great momentum. Karaganda grew very quickly, gaining ‘city’ status in 1934 and becoming the capital of the Karaganda Region in 1936. The city’s primary economic activity is coal mining however the iron, steel, cement, and industrial machinery production areas are quite advanced as well. It is the country’s most important industrial and commercial center. Traces of the Soviet-era can still be seen in the city, in both daily life and commercial life. A substantial portion of the population is Russian.

With its wide streets, parks, museums, and monuments, Karaganda has a vibrant arts and culture scene. The most remarkable of the numerous statues and monuments is the “Miner’s Glory” Monument. Structures such as the Botanical Garden, Regional History Museum, Regional Museum of the Fine Arts, Ecological Museum, and The Miners Palace of Culture are the city’s tourism, culture, and art hubs. Karaganda experiences a cold and temperate climate. The Sary-Arka Airport is located 24 km southeast of the city center.
