About Kostanay

Kostanay, which is the most important industrial, cultural and arts city in northern Kazakhstan, is located on the banks of the Tobol River. It is the capital of the namesake state. The city was first established in 1879 as 'Nikolaevsk'. In 1893, it named as 'Kostanay' in 1997 after it gained the 'city' status.

Kostanay means "Kazakh Tribe's accommodation" in Kazakh language. The urban economy is based on agriculture and industrial production. Cereal-oriented food processing factories are particularly common in the city. The history of the city is revealed by a number of outdoor monuments. Kostanay, where the temperate climatic effects are observed, receives considerable rainfall all year-round. Kostanay Airport is located 2 kilometers southwest of the city.
