Medan, which was founded as a small village named Kampung Medan by Guru Patimpus in 1590s, is the capital of North Sumatra province in Indonesia. There is the Strait of Malacca in the north of this city which is located on the northern coast of the Sumatra Island. Medan, which has important places like Great Mosque of Medan, Maimoon Palace, North Sumatra Museum and Tjong A Fie Mansion, is the third biggest city of Indonesia in terms of its population. The name of the city comes from the name of the Medina city of Saudi Arabia according to some sources or from the name “maidan” which means “place” or “area” in Hindi. Medan, which is home to an international airport, is the first stop of the tourists making a journey to Sumatra.

Balai Kota, Bank Indonesia and Medan Post Office remaining from the colonial period are among the important places to visit in the city. Tourists can feel the historical texture and atmosphere of the city by walking around. There is a mosque in the center of the city called Great Mosque of Medan. Maimoon Palace has a very special architecture and offers live ethnic music performance for its visitors.

Medan, which has a military museum called Bukit Barisan and a terminal called Pinang Baris that is located 10 kilometers of the city center, offers a different travel experience for its visitors with its culture and general structure. Air transportation of Medan is provided by Kualanamu International Airport. Kualanamu Airport is located approximately 1 hour away from Medan city center. There are flights to the airport from many parts of the world.
